BASIC EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN

 

The Basic EMT program is a six credit hour course. It prepares you to sit for the National Registry Exam which passing enables you to receive a 2 year National Registry Certification and a 3 year Ohio Certification.  There are many opportunities available to you as a Basic EMT. One being the Paramedic course which runs from August to the following June.

 

The Basic Course covers the following: Patient Assessment,  

    Vitals, Scene Size Up, Lifting and Moving, Trauma Patient, 

    Medical Patient, Splinting, Bandaging, Spinal Immobilization,

    and many more objectives.

 

There is ten (10) hours of clinical experience required during the course. These are completed after vitals and patient assessment is taught and skills evaluated. These hours are spent at a local emergency department or at the University of Cincinnati Hospital in the emergency room.  Five patients are assessed and clinical sheets completed.    

 

There are approximately 25 skills that will be taught, practiced and evaluated during the Basic Class.

 

Health Care Provider CPR will be taught and a card received.

The card is a 2 year certification.

 

The times and days change each quarter in order to meet the public demand. 

 

Only 12 hours (excused or unexcused) can be missed during the course. (This is a state requirement) After missing 12 hours you may continue in the course for the 6 hour credit and grade but will be unable to test for the National Registry Test.

 

There is a required text and workbook set: Brady’s Emergency Medical Technician Basic, 10th Edition.
